Human life cannot exist without trees. Trees emit oxygen and uptake carbon dioxide. In other words, they breathe in what we breathe out. Conversely, we breathe in what they breathe out. We are symbiotic with trees. The ocean emits about half or more of the oxygen we need, and trees and shrubs make up the rest.
When we look at a tree, a lot of our everyday worries and preoccupations fall away. Perhaps its rootedness reminds us to ground ourselves. Perhaps the spread of its limbs reminds us to spread our own, uncramp and unwind, feel the wind and the air. Perhaps its longevity reminds us that our problems are ephemeral and fleeting and that the earth itself is a far more permanent interest that we share. Sometimes when we look at a tree, we are just looking at a tree and that is enough. It’s a good moment. I’ll take it.
So this is in gratitude for trees and the greenery that we share and that makes our presence here possible and more beautiful.
This is Day 7 of My Gratitude Project. This year I’m focusing on what we share.
