we are all chameleons as we change colors with our shifting emotions

If you’ve been to one of my webinars, you might have seen this picture before. This chameleon is my favorite metaphor for how our emotions shift. Just as his skin changes with his environment, our emotions shift throughout the day in response sometimes to tiny stimuli.

We too shift our colors. We might go red in the face when we perceive someone is violating our boundaries—or we might lightly blush at a thought of someone or something that tickles our fancy. We might become pale if frightened, thinking of a danger that might have happened or even at a scary movie. We don’t literally go green, but we all know the feeling of being nauseated which is described as green, or as Shakespeare noted, we can be green with envy, which is a sickness of another kind. And of course, we all know what it’s like to feel blue.

So in a way, we are all chameleons, shifting our colors in response to how we feel as we experience the world we share. This beautiful reptile seems so different from us and so wondrous, but, we have more in common with him than we might first think. Underneath the exteriors, every being is reacting to, surviving in, and finding our place in the world around us.

This is Day 5 of My Gratitude Project. This year I’m focusing on what we share.
