I took this photo without a filter on a night when the sky lit up in the most amazing way. I was driving to a friend’s house and I noted the sky as I emerged onto the road. About 3 miles down, the colors had deepened to an undeniable intensity. I pulled over at the town dock and jumped out to take this photo over the water where the light was reflecting. Just at that moment, a kayaker was landing, becoming the dark shadowy figure that gives the shot its perspective.
The sun sets every day. Sometimes we notice, sometimes not. Sunsets are a shared experience across the globe that has the potential to produce daily wonder and awe for every person and animal on earth. It’s so universal that we sometimes take it for granted as we become caught up in our pursuits, our lives, or our destinations. But once in a while, as on this night, the sunset is so spectacular that we are reminded to stop and look up. We can drop whatever we are pursuing for the moment and appreciate the beauty of the world we share. The moment of raising our consciousness out of our everyday concerns and the ability to drop whatever seemed so urgent a moment before is what we call transcendence. Treasure it when it happens.
