Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a naturalist at heart. Every day, I try to get out into the world we share and wonder at the majesty and beauty that invariably appears before me. So this week, I’m sharing a few personal moments in nature that have left a lasting impression on me, starting with this video of whales.
About 2 years ago, more than a dozen whales took up residence about 20 minutes by boat from our summer house in Massachusetts. We went out nearly every day, mesmerized by their playfulness, the grandeur of their breathing which spouted water 20 to 30 feet in the sky, and their sheer size.
I could have watched them all day, seeing how comfortable and sociable they were together, side by side, over and under each other, in play and in life at sea. Clearly they shared a community and commitment to each other in the most natural way possible, accepting each other and participating without hesitation in the rhythms of sounding and breaching.
We look for them every year but they have not come back to our waters. Still, I’ll never forget sharing that moment with them and am grateful for the wonder they have left in me. For me, they are a quintessential image of the beauty, wonder, majesty, and mystery the natural world holds for us.
This is Day 2 of My Gratitude Project. This year I’m focusing on what we share, and this week’s focus is the natural world.
