Emotional intelligence is the number one predictor of high performance. Research from Harvard Business School shows that emotional intelligence accounts for up to 90% of leadership effectiveness.

I know how powerful emotional intelligence can be. I was a high school English teacher when I started up my first company. Nine out of ten startups fail, and odds are worse for people like me with no business experience or training. But I beat the odds because I had emotional intelligence, and you can too.

My company’s mission was to bring reusable grocery bags to the US. I was still teaching when I started my business. Standing on the staircase overlooking the faculty parking lot, I sold a quarter million bags my first year in business. So I quit teaching and in my second year, I sold 2 million bags. My third year, I sold 8 million bags. Because I had good emotional intelligence skills, I knew how to talk to people, inspire them, and sell to them.

I built a global supply chain stretching from China to every corner of the US. I managed teams here and abroad. I knew I didn’t know a lot about what I was doing, so I asked questions and listened more than I spoke. I empathized with my team’s problems and believed in them to solve them. I dedicated myself to my team’s success. Performance soared.

That’s how I established my company as a top nationwide vendor, maintained that position for 12 years, and sold the company. After I sold the company, I published a book about my experience and gave a TEDx Talk. I became a coach to help other people find the same success I did by developing emotional intelligence skills.
